A total of eight faculties from Yale School of Public Health (YSPH) and Yale School of Medicine visited Zhejiang University (ZJU) and participated in the bilateral meeting, including Professor Vasilis Vasiliou, Chair of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences of Yale School of Public Health (YSPH); Professor Yawei Zhang, Section Chief of Surgical Outcomes and Epidemiology; Professor Yong Zhu, Assistant Director of Yale Cancer center for Global Cancer Epidemiology, Professor Nicole Deziel, Professor Shannon Whirledge, Professor Anne Marie Jukic, Professor Ying Chen and Dr. Han-zhu Qian. From ZJU side, Professor Luo Jianhong, Vice President of ZJU; Professor Xu Zhengping, Dean of Zhejiang University School of Public Health (ZJUSPH); Professor Chen Guangdi and Xia Dajing, Deputy Dean of ZJUSPH; Professor Wang Hongmei, Assistant Dean and Chair of the department of Social Medicine of ZJUSPH; Professor Zhu Yimin, Assistant Dean and Vice Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics of ZJUSPH, Professor Therese Hesketh, Director of the Center of Global Health of ZJUSPH, and Associate Professor Zhao Lu, director of ZJU-Yale Collaborative Research Center for Environment-related Diseases, participated in the meeting.
On the opening ceremony of the 5th morning, VP Luo Jianhong first expressed warm welcome to all Yale representatives, then introduced the history of ZJU, recalled the inauguration of ZJU-Yale collaborative center. He is satisfied with the progress of the center and wished the great success of future collaborations. After emphasizing the center is a cross-schools/departments platform for ZJU-Yale collaboration, Dean Xu Zhengping introduced the development theme of ZJUSPH, and pointed out that environment-related diseases are the common challenges faced by all human beings. He expressed strong wish in establishing effective collaborations with Yale University in the related field. Professor Vasilis Vasiliou introduced YSPH and the Department of Environmental Health Sciences. He also described the possible collaborative directions between the two universities in both research and student education.
After the opening ceremony, the professors of both universities presented 20 interesting academic talks on the mornings of the 5th and the 6th. Except for Yale representatives and ZJUSPH faculties, Professor Zhou Qi from the College of Life Sciences of ZJU, Professor Shen Ye, Vice President of the First Affiliated Hospital of ZJU, and Professor Chen Ming from the Institue of Genentics of ZJU were also invited to present academic talks. Through these talks, faculties of the two universities earned a better understanding of each other’s research work, which will greatly improve the later establishment of further collaboration.
On the afternoon of the 5th, Yale faculties held a workshop of collaborative educational programs towards ZJU undergraduates and graduate students in the medical school. They introduced the CSC-Yale World Scholarship program in public health, the “4+2” dual degree program and the YSPH Summer Camp designed specifically for ZJU students. The students were highly motivated and asked many questions during the Q&A session.
On the afternoon of the 6th, the center held one-to-one meeting for Yale experts held faculties from ZJUSPH and affiliated hospitals of ZJU. On the 7th, they visited Hangzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Director of Hangzhou CDC, Wang Xuchu, and Deputy Directors of Hangzhou CDC, Shuchang Chen and Junfang Chen, warmly welcomed Yale representatives, and introduced the organization, major responsibility and educational program provided in the center. Both sides discussed many possibilities for future collaboration, including research, academic communication, and students training.
The 1st bilateral meeting successfully promoted the development of ZJU-Yale collaborative center, and has laid a solid foundation for the successful establishment of more effective, longstanding collaborations in the near future.
